Opinion.
Before focusing on straight news coverage, Justin got his start in journalism first as a columnist for the Opinion section of The Daily Texan, then as an associate opinion editor, guiding other columnists through their writing and varied opinions. While not a conventional start for a journalist, Justin’s work in opinion gave him the skills to analyze a broad variety of opinions objectively while leading a team under stressful deadline-heavy conditions. As an associate editor, he was also a member of The Daily Texan’s editorial board, writing about student elections in-depth and working to hold university officials accountable. He then served as the Texan’s sole forum editor, soliciting op-eds on curated topics from non-journalism students in an effort to include opinions not normally highlighted.
